The aim of this web site is to provide a comprehensive study of Class 47, or Brush Sulzer Type 4, locomotives. The study begins in the early 1960's and ends in the present day; a period of time that encompasses the development and introduction of the class, the diverse range of duties which the class performed so well, an array of technical variations; a profusion of re-numberings, namings, de-namings, re-namings; a myriad of liveries; and finally, re-builds, the scrapyard, or heritage.
Wider aspects to the Class 47 story are also covered: the FALCON and LION prototypes, the Cuban "48's" and the Class 57's. A "pure" Brush Sulzer version of the site can be found at

class47.co.uk is now into its 5th year and continues to grow on an almost daily basis. Consequently the resources needed to host the site, and the costs incurred, have also increased. I am strongly opposed to obtrusive, and intrusive, website advertising; so, as an alternative method of raising the annual hosting costs, I have decided to appeal for donations, with the aim of raising sufficient funds by October, which is when the hosting facilities are up for renewal.
