This page gives details of each Brush Type 4 which may be regarded as 'preserved'. The definition of the word 'preserved' has become much misunderstood in recent years, but for the purposes of this page I define it thus:
A locomotive being owned, whether operational or not, and kept at a private railway site; for heritage or historical purposes, and not for hire or scrap.
There are a number of locomotives listed opposite which do not fall strictly within the scope of this definition, and are included solely for compatibility with other reference sources; these are identified by:
1 owned by a train operating company, but stored at, or loaned to, a heritage location.
2 privately owned but hired to a train operating company.
3 parts donor.
