Late in the evening of June 12th 1976 Class 40 number 40053 collided with the rear-end of an engineers train between Laurencekirk and Carmont. A number of track panels were dislodged fouling the down line in the path the approaching 1S35 14.00 King's Cross-Aberdeen, being hauled by 47418. Smart work by the PW train crew prevented a high speed derailment, but the 47 was still slowing when it hit the rails. One wheel was derailed on 47418, a rail went into the cab above the buffer beam, right under the drivers seat! Another entered the engine room about three feet behind the leading bulkhead, and a third rail punctured the fuel tank. Not a particularily spectacular or serious incident but one which resulted in the Class 40 being condemned, and a lengthy visit to Crewe Works for 47418. DoT Report
